What is AstroYoga? The Astrology-Yoga Connection
Jul 01, 2026What is AstroYoga?
In its simplest definition, AstroYoga is the combination of Astrology and Yoga.
Yet, both of these words point to disciplines far more expansive than their popular definitions suggest.
Astrology includes both charts and horoscopes, but it also contains ancient systems for understanding time, natural cycles, the body, and the relationship between human life and the cosmos.
Yoga includes physical postures, but it also encompasses breath work, meditation, mantra, mudra, philosophy, and practices designed to connect the body and consciousness to that utterly subtle and sublime consciousness within.
AstroYoga brings these systems together. It connects the signs and planets with their physical, psychological, and energetic expressions within the human form. It then uses the practices of yoga to help us work consciously with these influences.
Through AstroYoga, astrology becomes embodied. The chart becomes more than something we interpret intellectually. It becomes a living pattern that can be experienced through the body, mind, and subtle energy.
Astrology and the Character of Time
One of the most important ideas in AstroYoga is that astrology forms the basis of our understanding of time and human lifespan.
Our experience of a day comes from the relationship between Earth and the Sun. Our concept of a month emerged from the cycle of the Moon. The seven days of the week are named for the seven traditional planets, including the two luminaries. Human beings have always looked to the sky to understand when to plant, harvest, travel, gather, and perform secret rites.
Astrology grows from this ancient relationship with the cosmos.
You can think of astrology as a clock that reveals more than the time, but instead tells us something about the character of a particular moment, as well as how moments are interrelated.
Every period of time contains certain possibilities, pressures, and patterns. Knowing the nature of the time we are moving through can help us prepare for it. We can adjust our practices in response to changing aspects and conditions.
Astrology can also reveal how the present moment interacts with the natal chart. A transit that feels energizing to one person may feel challenging to another because each person receives that moment through a unique astrological pattern.
The natal chart shows the character of the time and place in which a person enetered the world. It offers a map of the energies that individual is learning to embody, express, balance, and understand throughout life.
Yoga as a Practice of Consciousness
The Sanskrit root yuj means to yoke or join. Yoga is often described as a practice that brings the individual into union with the divine, which are both aspects of the greater cosmic Self.
Physical postures are one expression of yoga, and they have major influence off the muscular-skeletal, endocrine, and nervous systems, but they are part of a much larger system. Yoga also includes pranayama, meditation, mantra, mudra, ethical disciplines, and philosophical teachings about the nature of consciousness.
These practices affect us on many levels. A yoga practice can change the conditions of the muscles and joints, regulate the nervous system, alter our mental state, and refine our awareness of subtle energy. These in turn can affect the pathways that our life journey takes.
The body is central to this process. Even our most intellectual, emotional, and spiritual experiences occur through an embodied form.
Yoga gives us methods for working with that form consciously. It helps us recognize patterns held in the body and creates the conditions for these patterns to change.
Where Astrology and Yoga Meet
Astrology describes the quality of energy moving through time. Yoga gives us practices for meeting that energy within ourselves and our lives.
This is the foundation of AstroYoga.
The signs and planets are present in the sky, but their principles are also expressed through the human body and psyche. Mars can be observed as a planet, interpreted as a principle of action and direction, and experienced physically through heat, movement, muscular effort, metabolism, digestion, and the impulse to act. The Moon can be tracked through its phases while also being experienced through emotion, memory, receptivity, fluids in the body, and the subconscious mind.
The ancient Hermetic principle "as above, so below; as within, so without" describes this relationship. The human being is a microcosm, a small universe existing within the greater cosmos. The patterns occurring in the sky have corresponding expressions within collective life, personal experience, and the body.
AstroYoga approaches this correspondence from both directions. We can observe the cosmos to understand what may be unfolding within us. We can also study the body and our internal state to understand how we are experiencing the current moment.
Yoga then gives us a way to participate.
Rather than experiencing astrological influences passively, we can choose practices that help us express them with greater awareness. We can use movement, breath, meditation, and other yogic techniques to support balance, integration, and conscious co-creation with life.
How Can You Practice AstroYoga?
There are three primary ways to begin working with AstroYoga.
The first is to practice in relationship with the astrology of the present moment. You might practice a lunar form of yoga around a new or full moon, work with solar practices at solstice, or choose movement and meditation that correspond with the current zodiac season.
The second is to practice in relationship with your natal chart. Certain planetary energies may be especially strong in your chart, while others may be harder to access or express. AstroYoga practices can help you explore these patterns through direct experience and activation.
The third is to bring the natal chart and the current astrology together. In this approach, you consider the energies within your birth chart alongside the planetary cycles you are presently moving through. This creates a more personal and layered practice.
For example, two people may be experiencing the same full moon, but that lunation may activate different parts of their charts. One person may need a grounding practice that impacts the zodiacal position of the moon, while another may benefit from movement that encourages release.
Astrology You Can Experience
AstroYoga offers a way to move beyond thinking about astrology and begin interacting with it consciously.
The chart contains a great deal of information, but information without embodiment is lacking. You may understand a placement intellectually while continuing to experience its pattern subconsciously in your body, relationships, and life choices.
Embodied practice helps knowledge travel more deeply.
As you work with the signs and planets through yoga, their meanings become more immediate. You begin to recognize how Mars feels when it is clear and directed, how Saturn feels when it provides structure, or how the Moon moves through the changing tides of the emotional body.
Over time, astrology becomes a living language. Yoga becomes a way of participating consciously in the patterns astrology reveals.
AstroYoga is ultimately a practice of relationship: relationship with your body, your inner patterning, the natural world, and the now moment in which you are living.
When we can learn to recognize these relationships, we gain more freedom in how we meet them, we can support the energies that are ready to emerge, care for the places that need balance, and develop a practices that connects with us in every season.
In the next article in this series, we will explore the two lights at the center of astrology and yoga: the Sun and Moon, and the solar and lunar currents within the human body.
