5 Yoga Poses for Libra
Sep 24, 2026Balance, Relationship, and Embodied Harmony
Libra is the scales, the seventh sign of the zodiac, associated with the kidneys, adrenal glands, lower back, and the capacity to create balance within ourselves and our relationships.
Where Virgo sorts, refines, and organizes the material world, Libra considers how separate parts relate to one another. Attention shifts from the development of the individual to the space between the individuals. Through LIbra, we learn to cooperate, exchange ideas, and create relationships that allow each person to remain distinct while participating in the greater whole.
Libra is traditionally depicted as a set of scales. It is the only sign in the zodiac represented by an object rather than a human or animal figure. The scales symbolize a mechanical law of the universe that brings balance, justice, reciprocity, and the weighing of multiple perspectives.
As the cardinal air sign ruled by Venus, Libra brings the mental capacity to create beauty, harmony, and connection from even the most challenging circumstances. Cardinal signs initiate movement and establish a new direction. Air signs work through ideas, communication, perspective, and the power of the mind. Together, cardinal air describes Libra’s capacity to see connections between individuals, environments, and circumstances, and to create new patterns of cooperation.
Libra begins at the September equinox, when day and night reach a moment of relative balance. From that point forward in the Northern Hemisphere, the nights grow longer than the days. Libra therefore represents balance as a dynamic process rather than a fixed state. The scales continually shift in response to changing conditions.
Venus is the planet of attraction, connection, beauty, pleasure, and value. In Libra, Venus operates through relationships. It reveals how we exchange energy with others and how differing perspectives can be brought into harmony. It also reveals the desire we feel to connect.
When Libra is strong, you may feel cooperative, gracious, diplomatic, socially aware, and capable of understanding multiple points of view. At times, this same energy can show the shadow qualities of indecision, people-pleasing, conflict avoidance, over-accommodation, or censoring who you really are.
With LIbra, the invitation is to create harmony and become aware of the laws of the universe without abandoning your own center.
How Libra Shows Up in the Body
Libra rules the kidneys, adrenal glands, and lower back.
The kidneys maintain equilibrium within the body by filtering the blood and regulating fluids, electrolytes, and acid-base balance. Their work reflects the symbolism of the scales. The kidneys continually respond to changing internal conditions in order to support stability throughout the body.
Located above the kidneys, the adrenal glands participate in the body’s response to stress. They release hormones that help regulate energy, blood pressure, metabolism, and the body’s response to perceived challenges. Together, the kidneys and adrenal glands connect Libra’s search for balance with the physical processes that help the body adapt to changing demands.
The lower back also reflects the relational qualities of Libra, this part of the body supports the upright structure while transferring movement between the upper and lower body. It must remain stable enough to support us and responsive enough to allow movement.
In AstroYoga, these physical correspondences reveal that balance is an active form of intelligence. The body is continually receiving information, making adjustments, and seeking equilibrium. Lasting balance does not require every part to be identical. It depends upon an appropriate relationship between different forces.
At a high expression, Libra helps you remain connected to yourself while responding thoughtfully to others. It supports the ability to listen, negotiate, cooperate, and recognize the point at which compromise becomes self-abandonment.
When Libra energy is supported, you may experience greater equilibrium, ease in the body and low back, and the ability to balance with ease. When unsupported, you may experience dehydration, stress, nervous tension, lower back discomfort, or exhaustion.
The following five practices are designed to support Libra energy through balance, concentration, and strength in the back body.
Nadi Shodhana, Alternate Nostril Breathing
Nadi Shodhana balances the flow of breath through the two nostrils and supports greater steadiness within the nervous system. This practice can be especially useful when Libra energy is swinging between polarities and needs to find inner unity.
Sit in a comfortable position with your spine upright. Rest your left hand on your thigh. Bring your right hand toward your face. Close the left nostril with your ring finger and inhale through the right nostril. Open the left nostril and close the right nostril with your thumb as you exhale through your left nostril. Then, inhale through the left nostril, and exhale through the right. Continue for several rounds, allowing the breath to remain smooth and comfortable.
Shalabhasana, Locust Pose
Locust Pose strengthens the back body and the muscles surrounding the spine, including the lower back associated with Libra.
Lie on your belly with your arms alongside your body and your palms facing down . Extend strongly through both legs. On an inhale, lift the legs away from the floor. Lift your feet as high as you can, and remain steady for several breaths.
Uttanasana, Standing Forward Fold
Standing Forward Fold lengthens the back body and creates space through the lower back. The inward orientation of the pose lessens the pressure on the kidneys and adrenals.
Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Inhale and lengthen through the spine. Exhale and fold forward from the hips. Bend your knees as much as needed to release the lower back and allow the abdomen to rest toward the thighs.
Virabhadrasana III, Warrior III
Warrior III strengthens the legs, back body, and muscles that support the lower back while developing concentration and balance.
Stand with your feet together and shift your weight into the left foot. Begin to extend the right leg behind you as the torso moves forward. Bring the body toward a position parallel to the floor, creating one long line from the crown of the head through the lifted heel. Remain for several breaths and then repeat on the second sign.
Warrior III uses the Libra principle of counterbalance. As one part of the body reaches forward, another reaches back. Stability emerges through the relationship between these opposing directions.
Vrksasana, Tree Pose
Tree Pose develops physical balance while asking you to establish a clear center. The standing leg creates stability as the rest of the body responds to subtle shifts in weight and attention.
Stand with both feet grounded. Shift your weight into your left foot and place your right foot against the inner ankle, calf, or thigh. Bring your hands together in front of your heart or extend the arms overhead.
Remain for several breaths, and repeat on the second side.
Final Reflection
Libra teaches that balance is created through relationships.
The kidneys regulate the internal environment of the body. The nervous system responds to the conditions around us. The scales shift as they receive new weight. Through LIbra, the body becomes an instrument of reciprocity, continually adjusting to support harmony within a changing world.
This is a season for examining how you exchange energy with others, how you respond to conflict, and whether the compromises you make support genuine connection. It is also a time to strengthen the center from which you enter relationships.
When aligned, Libra energy brings diplomacy, beauty, cooperation, discernment in relationships, and the ability to hold multiple perspectives at once. It helps you recognize that harmony does not require the absence of difference. Harmony emerges when differences are brought into conscious relationship.
True balance is the art of counterbalance, and the capacity to remain connected to yourself while meeting the world around you.
