PROGRAM DETAILS

The Sanskrit word tapas translates to “fiery discipline,” and it is one of the oldest and most classical ideas of a focused practice that burns away all that keeps us separate from the world. In this unprecedented training, an experienced group of teacher trainers led by Libby Cox (E-RYT 500) will inspire you to discover the physical, philosophical, and energetic benefits of many different styles of yoga, from a basis of Hatha Yoga, so that you may kindle this fire within and share it with others.

Two Birds teacher training program focuses on how today’s form-based alignment-driven yoga practices can be enriched by functional movement study, in a heated and non-heated environment, and by classical Indian philosophy, pranayama, and Ayurveda, to build an integrated yoga practice (in a heated room or not) for you and your students. The program is designed to bring students into focus with the body rather than escaping it, using the body itself as a form of meditation and concentration through the flow of movement.

Please note, 95% of teacher training, including posture clinics, will take place in a warm, non-heated room, and 5 practice / classes will offer a hot environment.

Our mission is to provide you with:

  1. A well-rounded base line of understanding that you'll be able to apply to your own comprehensive yoga practice and teaching.
  2. Guidance to confidently teach an all-levels public class, suitable for beginners, and adaptable for continuing practitioners.
  3. Teach you principles of physiology, language and philosophy that will help you foster safe sequencing, and an inviting, body-positive classroom environment.

Each faculty member has spent years coming to her/his own hard-won research, thoughts, practices and points-of-view by pursuing myriad styles and ideas. As you review our biographies, we do not teach the same style of yoga, nor do we practice in the same meditative lineage. Yet, we all come together as a means to deepen the conversation about safe and effective yoga practice and teaching. We will introduce you to common yogic principles founded upon documented historical accounts of yoga practice, in a scholarly setting, for your consideration. Textual reference will include The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, The Bhagavad Gita, The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, The Vedas, Puranas and Upanisads. And, Two Birds will introduce you to a body of knowledge based on modern scientific exploration of the benefits of longterm yoga practice.

Ultimately, it is through your own reflection and through your personal vision and practice of these teachings that we believe you will teach -- and not through one set of rules laid down as dogma, as the "right" way.

In this teacher training program, you will:

  • Discover the long-standing physical and energetic benefits of a hot yoga practice by attending 5 public hot yoga classes through out the year
  • Discover the long-standing physical and energetic benefits of non-heated yoga practice in posture clinics
  • Explore the quality of tapas (internal heat) as a source of strength, austerity, and discipline
  • Discuss the roots and history of yoga through the study of yogic philosophy, the Sutras, and basics of Sanskrit language
  • Receive expert instruction about the anatomy, physiology, and alignment of yoga practices in a heated environment
  • Learn the basics of yogic energetic models, including the koshas, the gunas, the cakras, and the doshas
  • Practice leading classes using precise cues and active language rather than pure demonstration
  • Develop comprehensive and creative yoga sequences suitable for a secular public, while remaining true to a classical discipline of yoga

What People Are Saying:

The instruction and guidance that Two Birds Yoga Training provides is both experiential and pragmatic. Libby is a captivating teacher who uses language that is inclusive of all experiences and journeys. Her teaching style encourages that students find their own voice and cue from their own bodily feedback rather than repeat a series of cues from a book or text. I love that she often replies to questions and comments in a "yes, and" manner, showing that there are many perspectives and answers to all sorts of questions. Her team of skilled anatomy and physiology teachers are thoughtfully selected and thorough. Her understanding and teaching of yogic philosophy and tantric wisdom is pretty much the cherry on top. Stories and myths flow through Libby so naturally - she is a natural born story teller, wisdom weaver, and initiator of ritual.
